Greenwood Officer Fired Over Lt. Gov. Candidate Incident
2015/05/19 – GREENWOOD, Miss. – A Greenwood police officer has been fired after an internal investigation by the department in the April 7 arrest of Jelani Barr, an activist and Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor.
Police Chief Ray Moore tells The Greenwood Commonwealth that Lt. Randy Powell violated several departmental policies. Powell was fired Friday.
Video of the arrest of Barr showed major discrepancies between the officer’s account of the incident.
Powell has 10 business days to appeal to the Civil Service Commission.
Barr was arrested by Powell while filming a traffic stop and charged with disorderly conduct and interfering with police business.
Barr posted a video to YouTube that showed he stayed largely clear of the officers, complied within seconds of being asked to leave and was arrested while walking away.
