Civil Rights History Tour of Jackson

2015/05/28 – Mississippi has a rich history in the civil rights movement, that spans four decades. That history is rich and violent, from churches that served as refuges for participants of the movement, to the murder of a civil rights leader in his Jackson driveway. As our country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, come along as we tour the sites where the civil rights movement got started in the capital city. Learn about the history below your feet, and above your head around Jackson.

And your guide? Our very own Jerry Mitchell – the investigative journalist who put four KKK members in prison, including the assassin of Medgar Evers.

Your guided tour begins at the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center in the heart of the historic Farish Street. An air-conditioned motor coach takes you to The Clarion-Ledger, where you will learn the history of the state’s largest newspaper. Then our tour takes you around Jackson to see the historic sites. The tour concludes at the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center, where you receive a private guided tour.

There will be some walking involved with our tour, so please wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
