Mississippi-Branch NAACP President Derrick Johnson is now the interim president and CEO of the NAACP.

The NAACP executive committee unanimously voted to appoint Johnson, who also serves as the NAACP board of directors’ vice chairman. Johnson said the organization would be focusing on attracting youth.

“The NAACP is a complex organization,” said Johnson, which apparently requires a lengthier learning curve than originally expected for a new CEO candidate. Johnson serves as Vice-Chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors and Chair of NAACP National Convention Planning Committee. Currently, he also sits on the boards of the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, the Center for Social Inclusion, and the Congressional Black Caucus Institute.

Johnson continued saying it was important for the organization to reach out to younger generations who are being targeted by new, odious federal regulations to take away their right to vote and kill social safety nets that insulate and cultivate new generations.

American citizens appear to share that goal. Johnson claimed the organization is looking at a new budget that does not call for cuts to staff and programs this year, due in part to the organization’s new relevance as an antibody to unpopular decisions coming out of the White House, under President Donald Trump.

If true, the NAACP is not the only progressive, pro-voter organization seeing a swell in membership and interest since the November election.”
