DCPSJ Files Title VI Complaint Against DeSoto County Schools

2015/06/08 – Why did the DeSoto County Parents and Students for Justice (DCPSJ) partner with Advancement Project to file a federal complaint against their school district? Watch this video to learn more:

In DeSoto County, Miss., African-American students are suspended, expelled and arrested at a significantly higher rate than their White peers. This troubling pattern has included suspensions for infractions as minor as running in the hallway or responding to a teacher with “yes” instead of “yes ma’am.” Despite extensive advocacy, the district has refused to take substantial action – driving the community to file a Title VI complaint with the U.S. Department of Education.

Through our collaboration, we are demanding that DeSoto County bring a common-sense approach to school discipline, and create an environment where all students can learn, grow and succeed.
