In 2018, 11-year old Faith Fennidy was expelled from her New Orleans Elementary school because her braids were said to be a distraction that violated the school’s new dress code policy. A heartbreaking video of Faith being asked to leave school went viral, causing community outrage and the school to rescind the policy. This was the catalyst for The Crown Act, a law created by Dove and The Crown Coalition to end race-based hair discrimination in schools and the workplace. CROWN stands for Creating a Respectful, Open World for Natural hair. California was the first state to pass the Crown Act in 2019. Since then, 24 states along with Washington, D.C. have passed this law with Mississippi up next. Faith is now 17-years old and is a student advocate for Dove and The Crown Act. She turned her pain into purpose by creating Faith’s Crown Foundation, Inc. She is on a personal mission to end hair discrimination in all 50 states.
